In December 23rd, The Capstone Project Defense Ceremony – Semester Fall 2011 of 54 FPT Software Engineering students was solemnly held in Detech building, FPT University. After a serious time of preparation, FPT students succeeded in their last and most important mission of their university time. Especially, one of the projects was ordered for purchase by a company while it was still under development.

Although this is the fourth time, and the number was less than the first three, the Ceremony this time didn’t lose its serious atmosphere as well as the “default” anxiousness of students and their family. December 23rd was the day for 54 students to demonstrate their knowledge, bravery and their skill of presentation in front of their teachers, family and friends.

54 Software Engineering students were divided into 10 groups, with 10 varied topics in two specialties: IS (Information System) and ES (Embedded System). Among them were projects in ES such as UringTone, School attendance by face recognition… Projects in IS group were also abundant: Penny Auction Website, Tourism and Gastronomy Site, Jobs Sharing Network…
Anxious but confident, FPT students were satisfied with their presentations.
90 minutes was good for students to present their projects, run demos of the programs and answer questions of the Council. Direct questions with direct answers coming right to the point were the highlight found in all the three councils.
According to Mr. Nguyen Truong Long, Head of FPT University Training Department, Chairman of the 3rd council, in comparison to the trial capstone project defense day, the student groups had dramatically improved in content as well as presentation methods. FPT students had a good working plan, and a good method in analyzing advantages and disadvantages of similar products as the basis for their projects. Many creative ideas and initiatives were added and improved in this official ceremony.
Besides the content and idea of the project, teachers from the council highly appreciated the students’ reasoning and logical thinking.
Particularly, Mr. Long also claimed that, many capstone projects of FPT students can be invested for further development, especially ones promoted by FPT Technology Research Institute (FTRI). In the Defense Ceremony, student Dang Duc Trung told about the UringTone project, made by 5 members from his group for two months, had been bought by a company based in U.S right when the project had only 3 features completed. Now, the group is developing a new feature named DJ, and continuing to improve the application of downloading ringtones to Iphone 4.
Besides the appearance of many businesses, families and friends of FPT students are also interested in their projects.
The fourth Capstone Project Defense Ceremony also saw the attendance of representatives from businesses like: Smart OSC, Novellus Vietnam, Sanha IT ViNa. Head of the HR Department of Smart OSC Corporation, Ms. Tran Minh Nguyet said that, now there are 4 FPT students workingin her company as software developers. Assuring that Smart OSC was satisfied with FPT students’ professional level, foreign language ability, and especially their soft skills, Ms. Nguyet also said that her main reason for attending this ceremony was to “target” human resources for Smart OSC in the next recruitment period.
